Where Heat Escapes

Walls
The single biggest loss in most homes. Around a third of the heat in an uninsulated house goes straight out through the walls, which is why wall insulation usually does the most work.
Roof & loft
Heat rises, and an uninsulated loft lets a quarter of it leave through the top of the house. Loft insulation is normally the cheapest and quickest measure to put right.
Floors
Suspended timber floors in particular lose heat to the void beneath them, and they are the reason a room can feel cold at ankle height even with the heating on.
Windows & doors
Glass is a poor insulator compared with a wall. Older frames and single glazing lose heat continuously, and they are usually the coldest surface in the room.
Draughts
Gaps around doors, floorboards, letterboxes and old vents. Individually trivial, collectively a tenth of your heating, and the cheapest of the lot to fix.
